LICENSING ELECTIONS

HEAVY POLLING AT HUTT fIYE “MODERATES” RETURNED '' DETAIL? OF VOTING The triennial election of five members for the Hutt Licensing District took place yesterday. There were 14 candidates for the positions—two complete tickets of five, and an independent quartette. The polling was heaviest between five and seven p.m., .when the polling booths were crammed full of voters. The Oddfellows’ {Hall and the Court .House were excoptiormlly busy right up till closing time. Triio result was a complete victory for what may be termed the Moderate Party, as distinct from the party which, ;t wag understood, was opposed to the granting of a conditional license for the trotting meeting held on the iluvt racecourse. There are several licensed premises in the district, but the previous committee steadfastly refused to .grant a conditional license for the meetings. It was principally on this issue that the election was brought, and the result has been a signal defeat for the “dry” committee and a complete victory for the opposing ticket. The quartette of “inde-

pendents' 1 * fared badly, and were left at ths bottom of the poll, securing gery few votes. Details of the polling are as under: J. E. August 1997 A. Andeison 1904 A. 6. Bowden 1888 H. Foley 1772 J.
