UPPER HUTT PLUNKET SOCIETY

ENJOYABLE GARDEN PARTY Th© Upper Hutt branch of the Plunket Society arranged a garden party with the co-operation of Mvp BalcornbeBrcnvn at that lady’s residence on Sat* urday last as the final activity of the branch’s first year as an independent unit of th© society. Th© weather vtas simply glorious, and the crowd of supporters and sympathisers had a real good time. Sir Truby and Lady King, Sir Joseph and Lady Ward and Mr W. H. Field, M.P., forwarded apologies for. unavoidable absence from the function. In the absence of the member for the district th© Mayor of Upper Hutt, who was accompanied by the Mayoress, was called Upon to officially open the “(f\rden party.” Mr McCurdy expressed his Tegret and that of th© officers of the local branch at th© absenco of the secretary, Mrs H. E. Lodge, owing to serious illness, and hoped sh© would soon again be with them. On behalf of the branch he welcomed Lady Hoskinc and others of the Wellington central branch, and extended tlio same to the Lower Hutt branch representatives present, who in th© past had controlled the Plunk© b activities in th© Upper Hutt area. Th© stall holders had a busy time, and reported th© day’s takings as exceeding £IOO. Mesdames BalcomheBrown and Leckie (acting hon. secretary) had an exceptionally strenuous time, but the results compensated them for their efforts. During the afternoon the Upper Hutt Municipal Band rendered a number of musical items, which helped to give the party that “go” which makes success certain.
