SOCIAL AND PERSONAL » Sir Robert and Lady Stout have gone south again. Dr. and Mrs H. E. Gibbs, and Miss Gibbs, of Wellington, are recent arrivals in Christchurch. Mrs Dunning, of Vogeltown, Wellington, is staying in Auckland. Mrs H. J. Levy, of Wellington, is on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs Dalrymple (Masterton) is at present visiting Wellington. Mrs R. F. R. Beetham and Miss V. Hutchison have returned to the Wnirarapa from a visit tj Wellington, the latter has been the guest of Miss Betty Hislop. Miss L. Dixon nas returned to Masterton from a holiday in Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. Sherris and family have left the Waikato to reside in Wellington. ) Miss S. Brawn, of Cambridge, who was a competitor in the croquet tournament at Wellington, has returned home Mrs' Castle, of Eketalmna, is staying at Rona Bay for a few weeks. Mrs Ziman, who has been living in England for several years, intends returning to New Zealand by the Remuera. Miss Sullivan, of Wellington, is in Christchurch. Sir John and Lady Hosking have gone to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs E. K. Bethune, of Wellington, are staying in Auckland. Miss Muriel Clouston has returned to Wellington after a visit to Auckland. Mr and Mrs J. Andrew (Lnnsdowne) have been visiting Wellington. Mrs Guy ' Mace (of Masterton) is spending a holiday at Day’s Bay. Mrs H. V. Halse (Lansdowne) is visiting Wellington. Mr and Mrs R. Easterbrook Smith, of Wellington, are visiting Wanganui. Mr and Mrs Cattell, of Wellington, are visitors to Wanganui.

Miss M. Tompkins, of Wellington, is on a visit to Tubikaramea.

Mrs C. F. Lange, of Cambridge, is visiting in Wellington. Of interest to many country folk (says the Christchurch “Sun”) was the marriage celebrated at St. Mark s Church, Rotherham, when Maud, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Hand, of Rotherham, was married to Leonard Charles, third son of Mr and Mrs J. E. Kjestrup, of Masterton. Mr and Mrs <J. R. Gibson, of Wellington, are visitors to Masterton. Mr and Mrs A. Payne have been visiting Wanganui. Mrs E. Lucas has returned to Master ton from a visit to Wellington. Mrs S. M. Baird (of. Masterton) is at present on a visit to Day’s Bay. Mr and Mrs W. C. Barry, who have been staying in Auckland for the past few days, have left for their future horn© in Wellington (says the 1 Star. ) Miss D. Lewis, of Wellington, is staying in Cambridge with relatives. Miss M.' Abbott, of Auckland, and Mrs Ritchie, of England, left by car on Monday for Wellington and the Southern Lakes. Mr R. H. Abbott accompanied them. ■Mrs H. 8. Robison, of Nelson, who has been staying with her brother, Mr E. Anderson, Remuera. Auckland, lias returned home. Mr and Mrs Robison are leaving shortly for Singapore. on_ a visit of some months to their daughter, Mrs Roger Hunt.

Miss T. King has returned to Hamilton from a trip to Wellington. A London correspondent writes: On May 28th, at St. Thomas’s Church. Middleton Row, Calcutta, Menry Benedict Fox, C.1.E., son of the late Michael Fox. and Mrs Fox. of South street. London, 5.W.7, to Emily Anna Smith, of Auckland, New Zealand, widow of R. H. Smith, of Assam, India.

A dinner party and nance were given on Saturday evening by the captain and officers of the French war sloop Cassionee, while at Dunedin. The guests wore Mr and Mrs Sydney Neill, the Mayor (Mr H. E. Tapley, M p.V Mr Sutherland Ross, Mr and Mrs Marshall MacDonald. Mr and Mrs Mandeno, Signor and Mme. Souanse, Mrs Pammer, and Misseß Williams, Hartmann, Upton, land O’Neill. The French Club will entertain tbe officers of the French boat Cassiopee, while at Wellington. Mr and Mrs W. Carter, of Auckland, who have been visiting Wellington and Rotorua, have left for Sydney. Miss Mollie Valder, eldest daughter of Mr H. Valder, of Hamilton, left on Monday for Sydney where she will remain for some months.

Last Saturday morning, at St. John’s Church, Latimer square, the wedding was celebrated of Mary, only daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Gilbert, Middleton, to Robert Arthur Rose, Christchurch. The Rev. J. F. Coursey officiated at the ceremony, and Miss Elsie C. Smith presided at the organ.

Mrs Bessie Tobin (Melbour H), who has been paying a visit to her mother, Mrs R. Simpson, in Christchurch, left from Wellington by the Makura for San Francisco. She will proceed to New York, after paying visits to relatives in San Francisco and St. Louis, and will stay with her sister, Mrs Fraheis Blair (nee Kate Simpson, late of Christchurch). Mrs. Blair became paralysed as the result of a serious accident some months ago. She is making slow improvement, and hopes are new held out for her ultimate recovery. The marriage took place on Wednesday morning, at St. Luke’s Church, Remuera. Auckland, of Miss Lall Munro-Wilson, third daughter of Mr and Mrs Hugh Munro-Wilson, “Mandalay,” Remuera road, to Mr Philip Seabrook, second son of Mr and Mrs A. D. Seabrook, of Mount Eden.

Miss M. Cresswell, organising inspectress of domestic science, Natal Education Department, is a visitor to Zealand from South Africa, and is staying with her sister, Mrs T. Wilson, Ararata. A pretty ceremony was solemnised at St. Mark’s Church, Opawa, Christchurch, recently, when Elsie, elder daughter of Mrs L. Manning, Kaiapoi (late Coutts Island), was married to Harold Charles, eldest son of Mr C. J. Eaton, Riccarton. The Rev. T. M. Curnow, of Lyttelton, performed the ceremony, and Mrs Curnow presided at the organ. I Mrs J. H. Chapman, who has returned to Palmerston North with her husband and family, after several years’ residence in Geneva, was formerly Miss G. Blacklock, of Wellington. Her family consists of a little girl of ten years, the eldest, and two sturdv boys. All the children speak French as well as English. The youngest boy, who was born in Switzerland. learnt his first English words coming out on the boat to New Zealand. Although her husband has to return to Geneva, where he is attached to the secretariat of the League of Nations, in the course of a few weeks, Mrs Chapman intends remaining in the Dominion for perhaps twelve months. A recent wedding of interest was solemnised at St. Andrew’s Church, Otahuhu, by the Rev. W. T. Currie, when Miss Emily Ellen (Nellie), eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs John H. Nodwell. Otahuhu, was married to Mr Leslie D. Melvin, elder son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Melvin, of Green Lane. A wedding of interest was solemnised at St. John’s Church, Featherston, recently when Flora Madeline (“Girlie”) Bish, only daughter of the late Alfred Bish, J.P., and Mrs Bish, of Carterton, was married to Harold S. M. Fowler, eldest son of Mr S. Fowler, of Nelson. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr Seymour Bish (Greytown). Miss Constance Berrill, Carterton, attended the bride. The bridegroom was supported by Air J. Beggs (Wellington). The Rev. W. J. Durrad officiated. Mr and Mrs Fdwler will reside in Wellington.

The death of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Sanford at her residence, Queen’s Parade, Devoaport, on February Ist, removes a colonist of about sixty years’ standing. Deceased was the wife of the late Albert Sanford. They both arrived by the ship Victory, and were married shortly after landing in Auckland. Mr Sanford, who died two years ago, was the founder of the fishing business of Sanford. Ltd. For several vears his wife and himself lived at Rakino Island. Mrs Sanford had attained the age of 78 years. Seven children survive their mother, Mrs L. Courtney, of Henderson, Mrs F. Dunnett, of Devonport, Air Philip Sanford, of Sydney, Alessrs Paul and Gilbert Sanfcfd, of Auckland, and Air Herbert Sanford, of Devonport. There are 23 grandchildren. Miss Pattie Levett. of Bulls, Rangitikei, is leaving for Sydney to-day, en route to India. She is travelling with Captain and Airs Free. Alisa McLean, of tho Girls’ College, and Aliss Agnes McLean have returned to Wellington from Timaru. Tiie marriage of Miss Alyra Shearer, daugnter of Mr and Afrs N. Y. Shearer, of Lower Hutt, to Air J. Stevens, also of Lower Hutt, was solemnised at the Hutt Methodist Church by the Rev. W. Rowe. Tbe “Wedding March” was played by Mr R. Horman. The bride wore a pretty French frock of ivory georgette, beaded in crystal, a veil and orange blossoms. Airs Gordon Kirk, her sister, was matron of honour, and wore a frock of silver tissuo and lace, with a posy of pale blue and silver flowers. Miss Florence Tunnicliffe, as bridesmaid, was in delphinium blue georgette, with panels of silver lace. Each carried a bouquet to tone, and wore a veil of shaded blue tullo caught with silver leaves. The best man was Air F. Kibblewhite, and the groomsman Mr R. King. As the bride left the church she was presentee} with a silver horseshoe by her little niece, Margaret Shearer. The bride’s mother wore a dress of navy silk marocain, and a hat to match. Later, Mr and Airs Stevens left for the south, the bride wearing a navy frock and hat, with Kolinsky fur coat.
