BOWLING CONTEST

ANNUAL TOURNEY WHOLESALE AND RETAIL .MERCHANTS. It was a perfect day for the annual bowling match between wholesale and retail grocers for the Oak bowling challenge cup, a handsome, massive, silver trophy presented by Thompson and Hills, Ltd., of Auckland, for annual competition between the Wellington Provincial Wholesale Merchants' Association and the Wellington Grocers' Industrial Union of Employers. The trophy was only presented a year ago and was being competed for for the first time. The match was played in 19S1 and again in 1925, but there was no trophy. The cup, which was mounted on an oak plentn bearing an inscription on a silver plate, was on view at Seatoun green, where the contest took place yesterday. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr W. G. Talbot, on behalf ot the wholesalers, and Mr W. T. Stott for the grocers. The green keeper at Seatoun had the green in excellent playing order and very keen, and the president of the Seatoun Club, Mr F. North, was present to welcome the visitors. Mr W. Wylie was selector for the retailers. The match comprises three rinks and ia decided on the aggregate points and net games. Three matches to be played each season to decide the winners. Two or three friendly rinks, were also arI ranged in addition to the competition. In the earlier heads the wholesalers forged ahead on two of the rinks, one ! having a lead of 20—1 on the eighth head. Another wholesale rink was leading on the tenth head, but the retailers were ahead on the other rink 11—5 after eight heads. The tea adjournment followed, and was very welcome. ' In tho interval Mr F. M. Hill, of Thompson and Hill, Auckland, the donors, presented the trophy to Mr R. Janson, president of the Grocers' Association, and remarked that he was not a bowler himself, and had actually played his first game of bowls that afternoon. It must have been an inspiration which caused him to play, for it had knocked all the nervousness out of him, and he.was going back to Auckland to play bowls. (Applause.) Those with whom he had been playing had treated him with kindness and consideration, he had enjoyed the game end was beginning to see daylight through it (Laughter and hear, hear.) It was a great pleasure to present the cup, and he hoped it would stimulate interest and add enjoyment to the annnal match. Mr Jansen accepted the trophy, adding that it would give much more vim to the annual match. Mr W. Wylie then presented the trophy to Mr A. W. Press, on behalf of the Wholesalers as winners in 1925, and he added that the way the scores were going it looked as if they would retain it. This annual match was now anticipated with a good deal of pleasure.Mr A. W. Press, in response, 6aid he also played his first game not long ago on Se&toun green, and. had played in the novices this year, although not successful. Now he had that day been promoted to skip, and he hoped his team would win, although the score was 10—2 against them. (Laughter.) He was sure the trophy would promote a still more friendly feeling between wholesalers and retailers, and if the wholesale won the trophy this year he hoped the retailers would get some practice in and wrest it from them next season. (Applause.) The games were then proceeded with, and some fun was created when Richardson, who was leading for Crane (wholesale) inadvertently sent up a bowl on the wrong bias to career across the next two rinks and run into the side ditch. . In the friendly games secretary Stott also put up a wrong 'un. The green was so keen that quite a number of bowls .were “burned," and one player achieved the distinction of burning twothirds of the bowls he sent down. This was in one of the friendly rinks. In the match games the wholesalers forged ahead on two rinks, winning one by 19 and the other by ,13.' Wylie's rink was making a better fight, for although the wholesalers caught up the game was fought neck and neck +o the finish. In the 19th and 20th heads the wholesalers forged ahead with two to one, giving them a lead of four with one head to go, Wylie failing to get the support he needed from his team. Rankin scored a single on the last head after retail had been resting two. RESULTS.
