HEAVY MOTOR REGULATIONS

BUSINESS MAN’S VIEWS PUBLIC UTILITIES SUFFER. : A point of view not usually considered by tho public in connection with the motor omnibus regulations, was raised by the president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce in a letter to the Wellington Chamber, considered at yesterday’s meeting. The letter, which was in answer to a communication from the Wellington Chamber asking for support in seeking modification in the motor omnibus regulations stated inter alia: “With regard to the Associated 5 Chambers, I hope that we shall not agree to anything which will give these: * omnibus services *(which in many cases’ : are merely pirate services on the es--tcblished tramway service run by the ' ratepayers) any advantage over those publiely owned services. I cannot see. us, as commercial men, sanctioning*’ anything which* will put this'publicly owned service, in which millions ofji ratepayers’ money is invested, to a dis-'* advantage which will impose heavy monetary loss on all of the ratepayers in order to get the advantage of ’bus services, and in order to allow some”. ratepayers to make profits out of these 11 services.

<l \\e consider that the Employers* Federation has made a great mistake}m uncompromisingly opposing theseregulations beg that you will sec that the Associated Chambers do not ‘fall m’ in a. similar manner.” The president (Mr D. J. McGowan)* said that the point put forward was one worthv of tho closest consideration. Colonel Mitchell had the matter in Amu, and as he was not present, he advised that further consideration of the matter be held over until nextwhen that gentleman could attend.
