“THEATRICAL WEDDING”

CHASING THE REGISTRAR HOW THE COW KICKED THE BUCKET. A very novel story is being told of a lady member of a theatrical company now playing in Wellington. The company was in Wanganui at the time, and the lady Became acquainted with a gentleman, the pair desiring to run in double harness. There were only a few hours in which to obtain the special license, and, this having been done, they repaired to the registrar’s office, only to find that the worthy official had just gone home. The clerk gave them his address, ’ and suggested that if they went there the registrar would perform;the ceremony. Away they went, and on reaching the house found that, the registrar was busily engaged in tne yard milking a cow. He desired to finish his job, hut delay meant that the lady would be late for her appointment at the Opera House. The bridegroom then took a hand in affairs, and to stimulate matters gave the cow a hearty smack on the hack. The domesticated animal resented such familiarity, kicked the bucket, and sent the milk flying, deposited the registrar in a very undignified position on his back and careered round the yard. Fortunately the official had a strong sense of humour, laughed heartily at the episode, and forthwith tied the knot. The bride was able to keep her engagement at the Opera House, while the young man went home with the intention of going later to see the play. On getting home he found a note from his employer saving he was required back to work that .night. The following dav th,e comoany left for Wellington, and the bridegroom’s principal, hearing what had taken place, gave him two days’ leave to enable him to visit his bride, in Wellington. 1 The bride is continuing her engagement with the company, and the bridegroom has now returned to Wanganui.
