MORE BEER, LESS SPIRITS People are drinking more beer, wine ««<! tea, and less spirits, the report of the cuutoms and excise for the year ended March 51st, 1925. tells us. tobacco consumption is stationary. Some 800,OCX) proof gallons loss whisky has been consumed than during the year 1925-24. On the other hand, 15.6 million gallons of wine have been di'unk, compared with 14.2 millions in 1923-24. Nearly 22 million standard barrels of beer were disposed of. Consumption of ten leapt np by over 26 million pounds. There was but a negligible increase in smoking; £54 million duty was derived from 134 million pounds of tobacco.
