QUEEN’S DRIVE
“WAVES” IN PAVING COMPLAINTS BY MOTORISTS. At yesterday’s meeting of tlm City and Suburban Highways Board, Mr S. G. Nathan drew attention to serious waves in the surface of the bitumen pavement of Queen’s Drive, Lyall Bay. He had, he stated, driven round there himself, and it was very noticeable. At one time, from the feel of the car, he could not tell whether he was on the paving or off it. The part complained of was just beyond where the old hot salt-water baths at Lyall Bay used to be. The engineer (Mr A. J. Paterson) said that the matter had not been brought to his attention. It had to be remembered that on a narrow piece of road the surfacing had to be done in two halves, and it was not possible to cross-roll it. Sometimes this resulted in a slight inequality in the middle, where the halves met. Mr H. D. Bennett supported Mr Nathan’s statements. The lark of camber on' the road was, he said, noticeable. It was by no means the fine job seen in other parts, and, in fact, he should say that in some places water would run to the centre of the road rather than off it. The engineer; You must remembet that this is a new piece of road. It has hot been down ten days. Mr Nathan: The piece lam complaining of is not new. I agree that when this road is finished it is going to be a wonderful piece of work, but I think it would be a pity if for a few hundreds the high standard adopted in other parts were departed from. On the- recommendation of the Mayor it was decided that members of the hoard take opportunity to inspect the road in question.
