TRIAL BY HIS PEERS
A PRECEDENT FOR APPEAL 1 MAHARAJAH OF INDORE V ENGLISH COUNCIL ENGAGED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 25, 7.15 p.m.) LONDON, January 25. The “Daily Chronicle” states that Sir John Simon recently visited India in connection with the Viceroy’s demand upon the Maharajah of Indors to justify himself before the Indian princes, in view of the Mumtaz Begum conspiracy. Sir John Simon and Sir Patrick Hastings will probably be counsels for the Maharajah if he appeals to a commission of his fellow princes, as the King’s Counsel advise that there is no evidence to associate the Maharajah with the conspiracy. The precedent for an appeal to the S'inces is the trial of the Gaekwar of aroda 50 years ago, as a sequel to i poison case. Mumtaz Begum was formerly the Tuler’s favourite in Indore. She left the Maharajah, and an attempt was made in Bombay to kidnap her. At the trial which followed evidenoe was given that the kidnapping was to be carried out on behalf of the Maharajah.
