"READY TO DIE” CARDINAL MERGER’S END BODY LYING IN STATE (Sydney "Sun" Cable.) (Received January 25. 7.45 p.m.) BRUSSELS, January 24. Messages of condolence from all parts of the world hdve been received in connection with Cardinal Mercier’s death. His body is lying in state, in cardinal’s robes. The police were unable to restrain the huge , crowds desiring to pass the bier. They arrested several persons, and closed the gates of the palace. Weeping and praying crowds surrounded the Cardinal’s house during his last hours. He received the last sacTament, and said: ‘‘Now I am ready to die in peace.” , GERMANS~ABUSE HIM “MOST DANGEROUS ENEMY.”. (Received January 25, 7.45 p.m.) BERLIN, January 24. The resentment at Cardinal Mercier’s conduct in wartime culminated in an unparalleled outburst of calumny in the Junker Press, which declares he was Germany’s most dangerous enemy, and that he opposed the Germans’ kindness and humanity in Belgium.
