A FIRST INNINGS VICTORY

AUCKLAND TOURISTS GET HOME MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON COLTS BRIGHT BATTING DISPLAYS Bright batting displays were witnessed in the concluding day’s play of the Wellington Colts versus the Auckland touring team match, at Kelburn Park yesterday. Play was brimful of interest throughout, victory resting with the visitors by the margin of 30 runs on the first innings. L. G. Henms, the Auckland and New Zealand representative player, captained the visitors, while the Wellington eleven, which included B. J. Kortlang, was led by F. T. Badcock. On the previous day, Wellington, taking first strike, knocked up 157. Auckland, in reply, scored 187. WELLINGTON’S SECOND VENTURE Wellington commenced their second strike shortly after 11 o’clock, Bollings and Monkliouso being the opening pair. Hemus entrusted the attack to Coates mid Butler. Monkhouse failed to settle down, being howled neck and crop by a fast ball from Coates with his score at 4. Greipr joined Boilings, and the ’Varsity pair, playing solidlyv raised the scoro to 53 before Greig lost his wicket to a good ball from Butler. ' He had contributed a useful 23.' Latnason was the newcomer, and associated with Hollings, who was giving a stylish display, runs came at a merry pace, despite frequent changes in the attack. With the score at 13S Lnmason fell a victim to a ball from Badcley, who had been relieved behind the sticks by McCarthy. The retiring batsman had scored an aggressive 40. Bilby followed, only to be clean bowled second ball by Badeley, without his troubling the scorers. Leys filled the vacant crease. A few minutes later Bollings hoisted his halfcentury. After the luncheon adjournment Bollings and Leys continued to bat in enterprising style, 192 showing on the board before Leys was clean bowled by Butler for a bright 29. Browne and Huddleston failed to make a long stay. With the score at 218 Hollings was snapped up by McCarthy off Butler with his contribution just 5 short of the century. The ’Varsity colt had played a brilliant knock, and was warmly applauded. With the exception of Massey, who hit up 28 in quick time before being run out, the remaining lihtsmen failed to make a stand. Badcock, coming in last wicket, was smartly caught by McCarthy off Hemus when he had just opened his scoring account. Kortlang, also coming to the wickets at the tail-end, remained undefeated for 4. AUCKLAND PLAY OUT TIME Faced with the alternatives of either knocking off the 223 runs required for an outright victory or keeping their wickets intact until the drawing of stumps, and thus winning on the first innings, Auckland commenced their second strike shortly before half-past three. Badeley and McCarthy were the opening batsmen, Badcock entrusting the attack to Massey and Hollings. From the outset both batsmen scored freely, the partnership yielding 40 before McCarthy lost his wicket to a good-length ball from Hollings, when his contribution stood at 16. Gerrard was the incoming batsman, but failed to stay long, being smartly snapped up by Kortlang behind the sticks when he had just managed to open his scoring account. Monteith filled the vacant crease, and associated with Badeley, who had settled down to give a solid yet enterprising display, the total was raised from 48 to 94. With his contribution at 7, Monteith was dropped by Greig in the slips off Hollings. The Aucklander added 16 to his total before falling a victim to a combination of Hollings in the slips and Massey at the bowling wicket. Butler was the newcomer.

Badeley, batting in attractive 6tyle, hoisted his half-century with a pretty shot through the slips. Badcock rattled on the changes, Huddleston, Browne and Greig all being given a turn with the ball at the northern end. Both batsmen hit hard and often, runs coming at a fast rate. Badeley with his contribution at 68, skied a ball from Hollings into Bilby’s hands in the long field, but the catch was not accepted. A few minutes later, however. Butler’s career was cut short, Leys holding a good catch on the boundary off Huddleston. The retiring batsman had rattled on a dashing 20. Two balls later Badeley also met with disaster, being prettily snapped up at the wickets by Kortlang off Huddleston. He had given a pretty and invaluable display for 10, including eight boundary shots. As time wore on,

it became apparent that unless something very unforeseen happened victory must rest with Auckland on the first innings. The conclusion of the final over a few minutes after half past five saw Auckland with 138 runs on the board and still five wickets in hand. Johnson 4 and Coates 2 were the undefeated batsmen.
