Perfect weather prevailed for the opening of the match between tbe New Zealanders and South Australia. There was a moderately large attendance of the public. The wicket was fast. The local men won the toss, and elected to bat. Hope and Cunningham, the opening bowlers, caused an early disaster, three wickets falling for 8 runs. Rymill and Arthur Richardson stopped the /rot, scoring freely off both bowlers. The first 50 was scored in 38 minutes. Rymill, playing brilliantly, reached 50 in 49 minutes, and the partnership realised 84 in the same time.
