EARTHQUAKE SHOCK

FELT SEVERELY IN CITY This morning at 1.15 o’clock a sharp earthquake shock was felt in Wellington. It commenced with a light tremor, which increased in severity, and lasted two seconds. The shock was severe enough to cause the clock bells in the Post Office to chime a second time. The shaking of a building in tbe city made an electric lift drop, but it stopped before reaching the ground floor. The direction of the tremor was north-west to south-east.
