DIVORCES INCREASE

WHILE MARRIAGES DECREASE AMERICAN STATISTICS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association WASHINGTON, December 8. The'Census Bureau’s survey of marriage and divorce in the United States in 1924 shows a continuance of the declining number of marriages and an increase in the number of divorces noted previously. Marriages during 1924 totalled 1,178,206, compared with 1,223,924 in 1923, a decrease of 45,718, or 3.7 per cent. Only 10 States reported an increased number of marriages. Divorces decreased in 18 States, hut increases in the other 30 States more than offset the decreases. A surprise was caused by the figures showing New York, reputed to he a cehtre of wickedness, had but one divorce out of 23 marriages, leading all other sections ot the country. Oregon and Nebraska show one divorce for every two and three marriages respectively. /
