FIRES
FAMILY IN PERIL SAVED FROM THE FLAMES. Par Press Association. ROTORUA, September 24. Last night a two-stoned combined dwelling and store, and a garage adjoining, were completely destroyed by lire. The building was owned by Mr M. Board arid occupied by Mr Hugh Wallace Craig. The fire was discovered at 2.30 a.m., when a howling westerly gale was blowing. The flames cut off rhe staircase, and Mr Craig and his wife and six small children got through a window on to the roof of the garage. The flames drove them round the roof to the kitphen. Mr Craig worked round to the front, and climbing down a verandah post rushed for a ladder to save the family. The last child had just got down when the flames burst through. The whole' buildiiig was a mass of flames when the brigade arrived, and it was powerless owing to the wind. A fireman using a hose was severely scorched about the wrists. A threethousand volf, power wire passes the store, and the electric staff cut off the current. Tho telephone, telegraph, and power wires were burned through. Tile fire threatened a building on the opposite side of the road, enveloping it m a shower of sparks. A five-seater Studebaker was destroyed. There was no insurance on the stock; the store was insured for £450. ESCAPED IN NIGHT ATTIRE OHAKUNE, September 24. A six-roomed house in Miro street, Ohakuue, occupied by Mr and Mrs T. Towns, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The occupants escaped in their night attire, and nothing was caved.
