OLD KING COAL
Ono is apt to regard the coal trad© as an entirely modern development, but it is, in fact, one of Britain’s oldest industries. The Newcastle coalfield has been famous for nearly 700 years, its first mining charter having been granted in 1239 by King Henry 111. The London brewers and dyers were the first to realise the trade possibilities of coal, the fumes from which so annoyed the other citizens that, late in his reign, Henry 111. made the first smokenmsanco law, totally forbidding the use of coal.
Opposition was not long effective, however, for by Edward 11/s time both Newcastle and Derbyshire were sending much coal to London.
