NOMINATED IMMIGRANTS
SHOCKING STATE OF AFFAIRS HOSPITAL BOARD DISCUSSION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH? September 23. A clause in the report of the bene volent committee created a good deal of discussion at to-day’s North Canterbury Hospital Board. The clause read: “A report from the police recently received calls attention to "the ease with> which persons obtain nomination as immigrants to New Zealand. A case in question is being reported to the Immigration Department, and also to the Minister for Health, Sir Maui Pomare ’ The Rev. F. Rule said the mannei in which immigrants were being sent out here was nothing short of shocking. He had been chairman of the coal and blanket fund for some years, and every winter for the past two or three years they had been up against the problem of families landing in this ei f y with not, enough to get a meal for themselves, far less for their children. They had no bedding for a, new home in a new city, and were not out here three months before they were applying for blankets to cover them. He did nob know who was responsible for tlicir leaving the Old Country, but it *fs lime somebody took action. A doctor had told him that they could not tell whether immigrants had tuberculosis without examination, but they (bene, volent committee) knew they had no money in their pockets. It was agreed that a return should be furnished for the next meeting of the board showing the number of cases which had come before the benevolent committee from immigration families.
