AURORA AUSTRALIS

MAGNIFICENT SPECTACLE > The very unusual spectacle, and a very beautiful one, too, was witnessed from Lyall Bay, Island Bay, and other coastal portions of the suburbs last night, and also from Kelburn, where residents at first thought it was the reflection of a huge fire in the direction of Brooklyn or Berhampore. The atmosphere was very clear, there was little or no wind and no clouds, and the sky to the south was a glorious red or rose-coloured tint. It was the Aurora Australis, or southern lights, corresponding with the Aurora Borealis, or northern lights, in the Arctic region, which are seen periodically in England. The last display of the kind seen from Wellington was in 1921. when the sky was more streaked and variegated in colour.
