A DASTARD’S WORK
ELDERLY WOMAN ATTACKED.
A brutal assault on an elderly woman at Northland by an unknown assailant at the end of the week is at present occupying the attention of the police, who are vigorously prosecuting inquiries. Mrs J. Read, of Wilton road, returning home from the Town Hall on Saturday night, was about to enter her gate, when she was suddenly attacked by a man uom behind, receiving severo blows ir the face, which dozed her considerably. Hci bag, which contained a_ purse with a trans ticket and a few oppers, was snatched from her hand, and the assailant ma<Af off. Mrs Read was later found hj her daughter and assisted home, while her bag was recovered in some gars# by the roadside. Mrs Read, who is 57 years of an*, bad to be removed to hospital owing to injuries and shock. Wilton road is a lonely part of Northland .and if badlv lighted, and Mrs Read had about n mile to walk from the tram to her home.
