FUNERAL OF HON. C. H. IZARD

REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING. There was a very large attendance nt the funeral of the late Hon. C. H. Izard, which, took place yesterday morning. The funeral service was held at St. Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, and was conducted by the Right Rev. Dr. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, assisted by the Rev. V. Bianchi. Mr Robert Parker, organist, played the funeral march, and the hymns ‘‘Abide with Me” and ‘‘Lead, Kindly Light,” were impressively rendered. There was a large and representative gathering at the service, amongst those present being the Prime Minister. Hon. ,T. G. Coates; Sir Francis Bell, Leader of the •Legislative Council; Sir Walter Camcross, Speaker of the Legislative Council ; Mr C. E. Stathain, Speaker of the House of Representatives; Sir R. •Heaton Rhodes, Minister for Defence; Hon. R. F. Bollard, Minister for Interrial Affairs, Sir Joseph Ward, an old friend of the deceased; a number of members of both Houses, members of the Wellington Harbour Board and City Council; Mr R. Kennedy, president of the Wellington Law Society, with Messrs H. F. O’Leary, W. Perry, C. G. White, H. H. Cornish, P. Levi, and W. A. Hawkins, members of the society; Mr H. I. G raves, representing the New Zealand Football Association, of which the deceased gentleman was patron, find numerous representatives of city commercial and business houses.

The principal mourners were Airs Izard, widow, and Mr and Mrs Ernest Izard, and the pall-bearers were Messrs T. Shailer Weston, J. F. B. Stevenson, S. J. Castle, F. G. Morgan, Jt. Stedman, and F. J. Courtney. Wreaths and messages of condolence were received from the Mayor and City councillors of Wellington, Wellington Automobile Club, Harbour Board, Wellington Ladies’ Christian Association, Norwich Union Life Insurance Society, Rouse, Black, and Hurrell, Ltd., members of the Wellesley dub, Wellington Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association, New Zealand Football Association, Wellington Football Association, Littlejohn and Sou, Ltd., executors of the estate of late A. Scoullar, District Law Society, SeoullAr and Co., Ltd., Mr and Mrs Tv Shailer YVeston, Mr and Mrs Castle, Mr J. F. B. Stevenson, staff of Messrs Izard. Weston, Stevenson, and Castle, committee of the Alexandra Home, and many others. VICE-REGAL SYMPATHY Included in the messages received by Mrs Izard was the following from His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson: “Her Excellency and I have just heard with the deepest regret of the death of your husband, and we wish to assure you of our most sincere sympathy in your great sorrow.’* The Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates) sent the following- letter: — “It was with extreme regret that I heard of the death of. your husband, and I desire to send you the united and sincere sympathy of Mrs Coates and myself in your bereavement. In Mr Izard’s death the Legislative Council has lost one of its most esteemed I members, and his demise null be mourned by all his fellow-members in Parliament.” EDUCATION AND CHARITY Under the will of the late Hon. C. H. Izard, M.L.C., a very large sum is left on trust for charitable and educa-\ tion purposes. After the payment of certain legacies, the bulk of the estate is left, subject to a life interest to his widow, upon trust on the following terms:—For such charitable or educational purposes or objects to be carried out or effected within the Dominion of New Zealand as the Wellington City Council shall from timi to time, by resolution direct or appoint, and in such share or proportions (if more than one object or purpose), and in such manner aud form in every respect as such council shall from time to time by resolution direct or appoint.
