PERSONAL. Captain A. H. Prosser, who has been on holidays, has resumed command of the Arahura, vice Captain T. B. Sewell. Mr R. Fordyce has relieved Mr W Kennedy as fourth engineer of the Wail runa, while Mr J. Smith joined the vessel as fifth engineer. Mr J. Hare has been appointed second officer of the Kaiwarra, relieving Mr J. Warcup for holiday**. Mr W. Cole, who has been on holidav, has now joined the Kahika as second ofhcer, and Mr J. Delay has joined tho Waikawa as second officer, relieving Mr L. J. Deed for holiday.

THE KETCH FAIRBURN. The auxiliary ketch Fairburn, which recently underwent repairs after her stranding at Whakatane, will shortly enter the trade between Wellington and jvaramea. The ketch arrived at Auckland on July 31st, and later went on to the patent slip for repairs. The Fairhurn !s now loading coal at Auckland tor Gisborne, and is expected to sail tomorrow. From Gisborne she is to proceed to Wellington to enter her new trade.

MARINE LOSSES. A ix-tiiin issued by Lloyd’s Bcgisffei chipping shows that during the quarler ended December 31st, 133-1, 84 steam ers ami motor-ships of 125,459 tons gross, and -to Hailing vessels, of 26.180 tons, wore oiiiJly lost, condemned, etc. The figures lor tho previous quarter were 49 steam-motor-hhipH, of 58,089 tone, anil >8 sailing veh8 »l» «»f H. 487 tons. Ihe foregoing refers to ships totally lo.st, condemned, etc., in consequence of casualty or stress of weather. Ships broken up, condemned, etc., not known to be in consequence of caualty or stress or weather, totalled 121 steamers and motor-ships, of 222,350 tons, and 20 sailing vessels, of 29,904 tons. The gross reduction in the mercantile marine of tlie world, from all causes, reported during the December quarter, was 205 steamer:, and motor-ships, of 347,809 tons, and 60 sailing vessels, of 56,144 tons. As for several preceding quarters, tho percentages of losses to steamship tonnage owned were all less than 1 per *cnt., tiie highest figure, 0.55 per cent., belonging to Italy, with Japan next in m-der with 0.51 per cent. Other countries showed the following percentages ot losses: •—Norway, 0.45; Denmark, 0.42; opam, 0.35; British Dominions and Sweden, 0.24; United States, 0.17; Germanv, O.H; Great Britain and Ireland, 0.11; France, 0.09. No Greek or Dutch losses woro recorded during the quarter. in the case of sailing vessels, Greece Kimued the surprisingly large total of IMU per cent, nf the tonnage owned, although only nm? ship of 473 tons was actually lost. Sweden, which lust three vessels, of 2222 tons, showed a percentage of 3.,>0; arid fho British Dominions one of 2.65. Other countries in order were:—T.niter! The Waikawa sails from Lyttelton tomorrow for Wellington and Auckland to complete her discharge. The Komo left Napier last evening for Gisborne, and leaves there to-night for Dunedin direct, where she loads on Friday, thence Oamaru, Timaru, and Lyttelton for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne.

PANAMA CANAL TRAFFIC. During June 368 commercial vessels transited the Panama Canal, on which tolls of 1,659,490.06 dollars were collected. The average daily receipts from tolls for the month was 55,316,.33 dollars, which is the lowest daily average receipts for any month of the past fiscal year except May In addition to the commercial traffic, 11 small launches transited the canal on which tolls of 27.60 dollars wore paid. These were small vessels measuring under 20 tons. Tho total number of commercial transits f or the fiscal year 1925 was 4673, on which tolls of 21,400,523.51 dollars were paid. As compared with the fiscal year 1924, which wan a record your in Panama Canal traffic, this shows a docrenfio of 10.6 per cent, in number of transits, and 11.9 per cent, in tolls. As compared with the fiscal year 1923, tho traffic for the fiscal year just ended shows an increase of 17.8 per cent, in transits and 22 2 per cont. in tolls. From tho opening of tho Panama Canal to traffic on August 15th, 1914, to tho close of business on Juno 30th, 1925, a total of 29,705 commercial vessels have transited the canal, paying 119,203,311.97 dollars In tolls.

MANUKA RADIOS. A radio message received by Dio Union Company from the master of tho Manuka .states that the vessel i« due in thentreum nt Wellington at 3 o’clock to-morrow afternoon from Melbourne. ' She will leave again on Thursday for Lyttelton, Dunedin, Bluff and Melbourne. MOTOR SHIP "PORT HOBART. Destined for regular trade between Homo ports and Australasia, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line’s twinBcrew motor ship Port Hobart ran very successful trials off the T.vne in July last. The Port Hobart has a cruiser stern and a topgallant forecastle, her dimensions being 465 ft in length, 594 ft in breadth, and 434 ft in depth, moulded to upper deck. The vessel has been built to Lloyd’s special survov and classed ICO Al. The Port Hobart lias five cargo holds, three being insulated. The total insulated space is about 297,090 foot, while that of tho uninsulated cargo space is about 307.000 cubic feet bale capacity. There are two masts and six derrick posts. Tlie main propelling machinery consists of two sots of four-cylinder I)oxford opposed piston Diesel engines. Oil fuel is carried in No. 3 doublo bottom tank, in a tank under tho main engines, underneath No. 4 hold, iu the deep tank forward of tho machinery space, and inside tanks in tlie engine room. SALVAGE AT SCAPA PLOW. Further toll of the sunken German Fleet at Scapa Plow was taken recently by Messrs Cox and Danks, Ltd., of London, when they raised the ' destroyer V. 129 ami beached it oil the shore of Mill Pay in the Orkneys. This makes the seventeenth vessel raised at an average of one in 14 days, creating a record in the salvage feats performed by this company. j NEW LIGHT AT CAVALLA. A new light to take tho place of an old one has been placed on the shore to [guide ships to the harbour at Cavalla. [This light, which started functioning on [June Ist, is situated in lot. 40 55 30 N„ | long. 24 25 15 E. It gives eight white | Hashes per minute and has a visibility of 5 to 51; miles in ordinary conditions and 6 to G| miles in very clear weather. TREFUSIS AT COLON. En I’oute from New York to Auckland, the Hain Line steamer Trefusis arrived at Colon on "Wednesday last. This vessel, which will also discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin, is expected to reach Auckland about October 14th. THE KENT. Discharge of the damaged portion of the cargo from the Federal Line steamer Kent is expected to be completed to-day. Her sailing date Is at present indefinite. H.M.S. MAUNGANUI. En route from San Francisco and Papeete, the Union Company advise that the R.M.S. Maunganui leaves Rarotonga to-day for Wellington, where she is due on Monday morning next. She sails the following day in continuation of her voyage to Sydney. CANADIAN SPINNER. The Canadian Government Line hope to dispatch the steamer Canadian Spinner from Wellington to-day for Lyttelton, thence Timaru and Dunedin, to complete her discharge of Canadian cargo and to load for her return voyage. She returns here on October 3rd tor loading, and leaves on October sth for Auckland, where she completes loading and sails on October 9th for New Yoi’k, Boston, and Halifax. WEST NIVARIA FOR SYDNEY. RUAHINH’S MOVEMENTS. Now completing her discharge of London cargo at Auckland, the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rualiine will also commence loading there for her return voyage. During July last Messrs Swan, Hunter and Wighnm Richardson, Ltd., launched from their yards the Tainahine.* a steel twin-screw steamer which has been built to the order of the Union Steamship Co. of New Zealand for passenger service in New Zealand. Tho steamer is 275 ft in length and 40ft in breadth, being built to attain the highest class in Lloyd’s Registry- She nos accommodation for over 270 passengers in stato rooms and in the public rooms, and when running on short occasions can carry over 900 persons. The public rooms for tho first-class passengers include a largo lounge, a smoking room, and a ladies' saloon. Tho machinery of sufficient power for a speed of 161 knots consists of two sets of four crank triple expansion engines, supplied with steam by two largo boilers working under forced draught and arranged to burn fuel or coal, and working under a pressure of 1901 b per square inch.
