FRESH WATER FISH

QUESTION OF FOOD SUPPLIES EXPERT MEETS SOCIETY. Mr W. J. Phillips, F.L.S., F.R.G.S., of the Dominion Museum, at the request of the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, met that body and discussed the question of improving the food supplies of trout in the streams. Mr Phillips has agreed during his holidays to make a special study or the trout and their foods in the Wellington district, and prepare a report for tho society. The council decided to communicate with the other societies and see if it were possible to formulate a scheme to appoint a qualified scientific man to make a study of the fresh-water fish in N.ew Zealand and their food supplies, and when the scheme is matured to approach the Government for financial assistance: the idea being that those societies which can afford to do so should contribute towards the scientist's salary and other expenses. It was pointed out at the meeting that the trout and salmon £?re a great asset to New Zealand, and the time has arrived when New Zealand should follow the lead given by other countries and appoint some qualified man who should give his whole tiraq to the study of fresh-water fish and be able to advise the Government and the societies on the best means of keeping up and improving the standard of our fishing. It was . mentioned that Mr Hcfiord, the Government Biologist, had promised to give a lecture to the members of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society.
