OBITUARY

HON. CHAS H. IZARD, M.L.C* General regret was felt in Wellington at the deatli, which took place at his late residence, Upper Hutt, on Friday night, of Mr Charles Hayward Izard, M.L.C., senior partner of the firm of Izard, Weston, Stevenson, and Castle, and one of Wellington's oldest and best-known citizens, especially in legal and commercial circles. The late Mr Izard was born in New Zealand in IS62j being the eldest son of the late Charles B. Izard, one of Wellington’s original settlers. He was educated at and completed bis legal studies at Lincoln’s Inn, London. On his return to New Zealand as a young man, he joined the legal firm of Bell, Gully, and Izard, which was original! y established by his father. After leaving that firm he carried on business on his own account as a barrister and solicitor for some years, and in 1906 entered into partnership with Mr T. Shailer Weston. Subsequently, on their return from the war, Messrs Stevenson and Castle were taken into partnership. The late Mr Izard took a large part in the commercial life of the community, and was a director of many companies, amongst which were the Mann wo tu Railway Company, tlie Wellington Trust and Loan Company, Scoullar and Company, and the Norwich Union Life Insurance Company. He was for many years a member of tho Wellington City Council, and represented Wellington North in Parliament from 1906 to 1909. He was called to the Legislative Council in 1918. A man of sterling character and of great business acumen, he took th& keenest interest in all matters having for their object the improvement of the city, and will be a distinct loss to the civic life of the community. The mortal remains of the late Mr Tznrd were brought in on s'imdnv evening to St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, to which floral tributes may be sent. The funeral service takes place at the cathedral at 10 a.m. this morning, tb O subsequent service taking place at tho crematorium, Karcri cemetery.
