Having scored the same double against the Wellington South and Ngaio clubs earlier in the season, the Wellington Club wins both the senmr and junior competitions. THe first match between our two oldest chess clubs was played on May 28th, Bcor * that occasion being: •Wellington Chess Club 61, Working 2i. Messrs R. J. Barnes, • , \ felling, and C. W. Tanner were : l u .. ed in team that represented the Working Men's Club in those faraway days. In last Saturday's contest Mr Barnes used the handsome Staunton- set of chessmen that was the first prize in the Working' Men's Club's first chess tourney, which was held in the year 7889, there being 18 competitors. This trophy was presented by the late Mr A. A. Nuart-Menteath. who at that time represented the “Te Aro” constituency in Parliament. The success of the Working Aten's Club's pioneer tourney was 'T-ry largely due to the energy and enthu*ua*in of the late Detective Chryatal, who passed away in Christchurch some two years ago. The Wairarapa representatives returned the visit in Coronation Week (June, 1911), when the city I team regained the laurels lost in the first encounter five years previously. THE NGAIO CLUB The Ngaio Chess Club’s 1924-5 championship tourney has just been concluded, Mr J. Lindsay winning in ploying off a tie with Mr G. A. Jones, a former Mnsterton champion. This is Mr Lindsay's fourth consecutive win. his record being a very fine one. Last year he won '*'iti'*Kht the gold medal presented by Mr W. Watts, and now he is first holder of the watts silver cup.
