YACHTING.
Yachting circles in Wellington hare lost a most capable deep-sea sailor, probably the best in the district, by the death of Jack McLean, at the early age of 31 years, after an illness of about eight days. He will be best known as the owner of the yacht Eona, with which he won most of the principal races in the last two or three years. McLean could handle a boat with anyone, and in the Port Nicholson Yacht Club was regarded as one of the cleverest deep-sea sailors. He and his father sailed the White Heather to the Chatham Islands for a fishing season, and then sailed her back to Wellington. When the lorangi was brought up from Dunedin to Auckland she carried away her masts in Cook Strait and was towed by a steamer into Wellington for repairs, and McLean was one of the crew to take her to Auckland. He was also a member of the crew of the Waitangi, which was owned by his father, who is also owner of the yacht Eestless. He and his father, and Mesdamcs McLean, senior and junior, sailed the Eestless from Auckland to Wellington last season.
