HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

WELLINGTON A DEFEAT OTAGO FINAL THIS MORNING. Wellington A defeated Otago ifi thp semi-final of the provincial hockey tournament by two goals to nil, after an exciting match on a sodden field. Wellington took charge early in the game, Armstrong qnd Stratton being proSinent in the attack. got away last, but were offside, and Wellington came -back to'the eitcle, where Lusty and W. Hood shot unsuccessfully. Lusty had another attempt immediately afterwards, but the shot failed. Armstrong, when in possession, was robbed of the ball by Gurr, and Otago attacked strongly, just missing a goal owing to a miss-hit. The southern forwards warmed up to their work, and Bridgem&n was responsible for a beautiful goal shot, for which, however, "sticks" were given against him. Half-time was called with no score. Wellington secured the ball after halftime, nut! vent right* tnrough the Otago defence. Stratton .being unsuccessful, but giving Lusty a chance to follow in smartly. For the greater part of the second spell Otago were on attack, the Wellington goal oeing in danger on many occasions. Eventually/ just before time. Trott secured the ball from Perrin, ana his pass was accepted by W. Hood, the latter beating four of the Otago men te net. CIVIC RECEPTION

AUSTRALIANS WELCOMED. At the Town Hall yesterday afternoon* a civic reception was tendered by His Worship the Mayor (Mr C. J. B. Norwood) to the members of the visiting overseas Australian hockey team, who will meet New Zealand this afternoon in a Test match at the Basin Reserve. In welcoming the team, Mr Norwood expressed gratification at the bonds of friendship existing between Australia and the dominion. Regarding hockey, he said the game was growing by leaps and bounds the wide .world .over, and to-day had reached international status. Councillors Wright and Burn &Ibo welcomed the Australians. • Mr J. W Able (captain), replying, was emphatic in his praise of the hospitality extended, to the Australians throughout their tour of the Dominion, and said they had bad a wonderful trip. Major Mills, vice-captain, also spoke.

TO-DAY’S TEST MATCH

AUSTRALIA v. NEW ZEALAND. This afternoon, at the Basin Reserve at 3 o'clock, the Australian hockey pliers will meet a New Zealand eleven in the only Test match of the visitors' tour. The New Zealand team is considered strong in all departments, and the visitors are expected to have a formidable team in the field to-dey, so that an interesting match should result. As an additional attraction, arrangements have been made with the Football Association to -stage a game between teams representing H.M.S. Dunedin and Wellington at the same time as the Test. A Wellington ladies' eleven will also be seen in action against a Maori ladies* team from Otaki. During the afternoon selections will be nlayed by the silver band from H.M.S. Dunedin.
