NOTES FROM CHRISTCHURCH

GRAND NATIONAL CANDIDATES (“Times” Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, August .7. Tinokaha has been working indifferently, and is not likely to offer any serious opposition to the place fillers in the National. Lucullemt, who won the big hurdle race on.the concluding day at the recent Wellington meeting, is another jumper who has leceded slightly- in the estimation of the track watchers. His work has been lifeless, and the heavy going at the Wellington fixture appears to have got to the bottom of the liucullus gelding. Killocra ran a disappointing racp in the Brabazon Welter at Riccarton on Saturday, and was one of the last to finish. Tigerland was responsible for a good performance in the Homeby Steeplechase at Riccarton on Saturday, as he was out in front ior a mile and, a half forcing the pace, and was within a couple of lengths of Passin’ Through and Erie, as they' reached the judge. What-beats him in the Grand National Steeplechase should win. Tuki’s form in 'he Homeby Steeplechase at the Christchurch Hunt dub’s meeting was too bad to be true. He was tailed off .all through thee race, and finished a hundred yards away from the placed horses. Erie cfeated a good impression when she won the steeplechase at Riccarton on Saturday, ana is certain to be one of tho best supported candidates,,for the Grand National Steeplechase. Te Kawa simply played with the opposition in the Open Hurdles. Handicap on Saturday, and won with ridiculous ease from Many Colours. . It was pleasing to see him score first time out for his new owners. Penury Rose ran much below Wellington form, and was never in . firing-line at any part of the jour-' ncy. . Captain Sarto was always up amongst the second division in the Open Hurdles Handicap, and finished close up behind the placed horses. Boomer day finished possibly hotter than any horse in the race in the Open Hurdle Handicap, and over the longer distance m the Grand National Hurdle race, will certainly he a very hard horse to beat. When Sir Rosebery schooled badly at Riccarton last week he lost an army of supporters, but many of these will no doubt regain their confidence in W. Garrett’s jumper after the splendid exhibition he gave over the fences on the course proper on Tuesday morn‘"cassells (A. E. Ellis), Frenchman (P. Mcßrearty) and Sir Rosebery (A. McDonald) started off at the big sod wall on the course proper, and jumped once round over the steeplechase fences, concluding the performance when they jumped Cutts’s fenpe. , The three horses gave a good exhibition, although Frenchman was some distance behind at the finish. _ . . ■ Boomerday (W. Rennie), went twice

round over the schooling hurdles, but 1 the exhibition was marred by a fall at the second last fence. Rennie, remounted, and completed the journey, without further mishap. Sporting Girl (A. E. Ellis) and Mainspring (O. Cullum), gave a good showing over four flights of hurdles. Both were winners at. the Hunt ■ dub meeting on Saturday, and’ it would occasion no surprise to fina. them again saluting the judge before the conclusion of the August' fixture. Lueullent (N. Rowe) and Captain Sarto (H. McSweeney), gave a firstclass exhibition of jumping over four flights of hurdles. ■ Nightraid (O. Cullum), Tuki OH. McSweeney), and Fireblight (A. McDonald) are credited witn giving one of the best exhibitions of jumping seen for some time, while schooling m company over six of the schooling fences at, Riccarton on Wednesday momMannga (A. McDonald), created, ft. good impression when he schooled over five of the schooling hurdles at. Riccarton on Thursday.
