CHESS

CANTERBURY v. WELLINGTON. The annual 20-aside telegraphic match between the above clubs Was commenced last Monday evenings. With a view to effecting/an early start both clubs had working bees busy earlier in the day, the preliminaries at this end being in the experienced hands of Mr W. Toomath, the local hon. secretary. It was intended to commence play at 6.30 p.m., but. as some players did not put iri an appearance till 7 'n.m., and a further hour was •lost owing-to some fault with the wires, there was "nothing doing” till 8 p/m. Most of the games are therefore in rather a backward state. At board' 13 Mr A. T. Oraveu, a vice-president of the Wellington Chess Club, Avon a knight, and /then pushed a fine attack that carried all before it, enabling him to "score first blood” for the local side just before 11 p.m. Wellington has a two-paw*n advantage at board 18, and is the exchange to tho good, at board 20. The Canterbury Chess Club, on the ptlier hand, is a pawn up at boards 6 and 10. The remaining 15 gaiqgs are in a very- feven state. It is hoped to make better progress when the match is resumed this evening. , Messrs F. W. Rivers (Wellington) arid S. T. Seward (Christchurch) carried out the duties of - telegraphist with the utmost accuracy and dispatch. Messrs R. A. Joseph (Christchurch) and. Johannes. C. Andersen (Wellington) rendered valuable service as umpires. Mrs Gyles did the bulk of the local scrutineering in the unavoidable absence of Mr W. Bosher. The local team is minus the services of Messrs A, W. Gyles, S. Faulknor, Fouhy, Purchae, J. W. Simpson, Wild. Godtscalk. Brooker, Bennett: and C. ,W. Tanner—but a close finish is, nevertheless, looked for.
