'Dearest Little Ver^e-Makers, — x Your bits-of-songs have been fluttering in for so many days that my bead is just full of rhymes and rhythms I Some of them short, some of them long, hut all of thetn very sweet. And at last here is the prise one. I know you’ll love it • ■ • it’s a beautiful little story, and it’s beautifully told* ■ • ' / ■ ■ ‘ THE BOOK OF LOVE A pedlar came to the door, one day. “I have beautiful jewels,” he, skid. “0, maiden fair, will you buy of my ware, Or turn me kwky instead?” The rich little maid threw back her curls, v And laughed at his pitiful voice, j. “Show me these jewels, O pedlkr,” she said, ' “And let ipe make, my choice.” A smile passed over the pedlar’s face As he proudly khowed his tray. “These diamonds are of a costly price, Having come from far away.” Then the knaiden chose some beautiful pearls. “But-first name the price,” said she. He named the price, and she-turned to go, When these few words spake he: “Those pearls are beautiful and rare, As you may quite well see, ~ , But of all my treasures this ‘Book of Love’ Is dearest of all to me.” The weary traveller went his way, But the rich little maiden wept, “Why did I choose these ugly pearls,. That I wish the pedlar had kept!” Next day the pedlar culled again. “Are you pleased-with your pearls?” he skid* “O, take them back, and give to me The Book of Lbve 1 instead!” By JOAN GARD’NER (aged 13). 191, The Terrace. . / . .
