WAR CRIMINALS
GERMAN SENTENCED TO DEATH FEROCIOUS ACTS IN 1914. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. PARIS, July 23. A conrt-martial at Amiens passed sentence of death, in contumaciam, upon the German, Lieutenant-Colonel Waechter, one of the alleged war criminals, for murder and arson. ' Waechter was town major at Esqueheries, on the Aisne, in 1914, Vhen a French soldier who was found hidden in a farm was shot without a trial and, the farm burned, and the farmer’s wife imprisoned. Eleven British soldiers were found hiding in another farm, and were shot, with the farmer, whose family were imprisoned, and whose , farm was burned. Another French woman, Madame Logez, who hid 35 British soldiers and afterwards helped them to escape, was shut in an iron cage, and was afterwards sentenced to hard labour and her mill was burned.
