GNOMES IN THE GARDEN
Attractive little gnomes in terra cotta are/the latest novelties in garden ornaments. They vary considerably in size and elaboration, the smallest of all being procurable, at the nimble ninepence, -while the largest run into a pound or two. The great art in arranging these small figures is to place them so that they come to view unexpectedly, halfhidden under a Hush or, in the long gras.. They must not, of . course, be placed where' they' are' likely to he kicked, for the clay, though baked to a commendable hardness, is' likely to split Sunder a sudden blow. The surface is specially prepared and covered with oil paint, ;which withstands both rain and sunshine. The most effective are -the little brown gnomes, with dark Jed caps and jerkins, hut there is much to he said in favour of those in the fawnish tint, which goes so well with a crazy pavements They give a deliciously quaint air to any lawn, or small garden plot, that might otherwise be lacking in interest.
