GETTING BETTER

RAILWAY FIGURES GROSS SURPLUS £15,000 HIGHER. The railway' figures for the period ending June 20th show an improvement on the corresponding figures last year.* The receipts were £1,687,172, expenditure £1,374,797, showing a surplus of receipts of £312,375, against a surplus of £297,317 last year. In the North Island the expenditure amounted to 78.49 of the receipts, and in the South Island 88.95, against 75,41 and 86.54 last year. In the new form of statement the receipts and expenditure on Lake Wakatipu steamers are now shown separately, and also the receipts and expenditure in connection with refreshment rooms, advertising and subsidiary services. For refreshment rooms, advertising and other subsidiary services the expenditure has been £54,875 and the receipts £53,657. or 2.23 below the expenditure, but these figures should considerably improve lftter in the year.
