j TO NAPIER AND NEW PLYMOUTH ARE THEY PRACTICABLE? An interesting report upon night trains was under consideration at the meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce I yesterday, at which Mr D. J. McGowan ! presided. The highways transport committed imported : "From our experience of the Mam Trunk 'limited* express we consider the provision of night trains highly desirable, and they would be a great oonvenienoe to business people; but as to night trains being feasible and a practical proposition, oven for *ome of the summer months only, on the New Plymouth and Napier lines, we are somewhat in doubt, and before expressing any definite opinion we *ecommend that the chamber wait the reply of the Minister and of the Bailway Board to ’.he Taranaki Chamber's suggestion made to them." Mr A. Fletcher moved the adoption of the report, and said it seamed very doubtful if it would be a paying proposition from the department's point of .view. SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK Th'j highways and transport committee discussed the Canterbury Brog/ess League's request for the support ol the chamber towards the completion of the South Island Main Trunk railway, via j the East Coast route. It was pointed out ’ that the Government had heavy commit- ' Trents in uncompleted * lines? t»nd while i it wan considered highly desirable that ; the trunk lines should be put through ns soon as ©OBsibte. the committee felt they were not competent to pass iudgin this particular instance, and \.on--idered the matter was one tor the <*tcompleting the line was dealt with .p the , district more intimately affected Mr A. Fletcher said the desiramlitv of j completing the line was dealt vithin the
report of the Railway Commission, but the question to be considered was whether it should be through the centre of the country or along. the coast. The report was adopted.
