RAILWAY SMASH
REVELATIONS AT INQUIRY WORKMAN SAW DANGER BEFORE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. BRISBANE. July 22. At the inquiry into the Gympie railway smash on June 9th. Mr McGinley, representing the Australian Railwaymen’s Union, said he would call evidence to support the belief that the accident was not caused by an obstruction, but by a depression or hole on the outside rail at a curve. He intended to call evidence to show that the curve was irregular. It was wavy, and showed other variations from its true form, such as would make it unsafe to run over. He contended that the curve was not properly laid A railway fettler gave evidence that ho discovered a hole in the curve on the afternoon of June Bth, but as it was close to knecking-off time, he put off remedying the defect till another time.
