MANNING OF WAIPORI UNION COMPANY’S PROPOSALS. Per Prow Association GREYMOUTB, July 21. *Tbe dispute over the manning of the stokehold crew of the Union Company’s steamer Waipori which has existed since July 2nd reached a deadlock to-day when the company, in replying to two alternative proposals for settlement, advanced by the unionists,, issued an ultimatum to the eirect that unless the vessel waa taken to sea on to-night s -tide- by- the -original',-manning the company propose "taking steps to map the ship; " ' The firemen j five of whom are in prison for refusing to sail, demanded the original provision ,of two trimmers, and the assistant union secretary, Mr Howell, of Wellington, later submitted alternative proposals whioh were either "to put. two of the ship’s greasers trimming with the addition of a third trimmer, or to increase the manning by one trimmer, to be exclusively worked by- day trimming sufficient for the night watches. All the seaman unionists on the Waipori regard the company as throwing down the gauntlet, and consequently have resolved that if non-unionists are brought to man the vessel they will refuse duty, and take the consequences. Moreover, the fireiuen’a .original demand for two trimmerb is now being reinstated. It is expected that the companv will bring some of its permanent hands overland to man the Waipori in the course of a couple of days.
