GIFTS TO EDUCATION
SCHOLARSHIPS AND RESEARCH OFFERS AMOUNT TO £58.50. Fer Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 21. At a meeting of the University Council this afternoon a tetter was reoeiy-; ed from the Invercargill Savings Bank making' a gift of. £IOOO for the establishment of a scholarship for girls attending the'Southland and Gore High Schools, and the Dunedin Savings Bank forwarded a gift of £750 for the new dental school. Both gifts were received ;with thanks. ....... The trustees of the estate of the late Mrs Lizzie Ratlibone wrote asking if the council would accept the sum of. £3OOO for the purpose of scholarships;' The trustees formulated certain conditions surrounding the gift, and these were referred to the finance committee with power to act. , The widow of the'-late Mr H. A. Massey forwarded a gift of £IOOO, which she stated she had promised for New Zealand cancer research for use in any way that would produce the best and quickest results’:" .The gift was rer ceiyea with thanks. -«' 11 ' In connection with cancer research work, a gift of £IOO was received from the estate of a working man who died of cancer in 'Wellington. This £IOO cover a subsidy or £IOO, and so also will Mrs Massey’s gift of £IOOO. Dr. Hercus, Professor of Bacteriology, in reporting on the gifts for cancer research work, suggested that the two funds should he ppoled, and that £SGO should he allocated from the combined fund for. the payment of a research scholar for one year. The medical and finance committees were instructed to report on Dr. Herous’s recommendations.
