“SWORD OF DAMOCLES”

VOLUNTARY CONFESSION LINDERGREEN ADIiITS THREE CHARGES. “Uneasy lies- the head that wears a crown.” Thus spake a king of old, olden days. For some time past three charges, the first of assisting Alfred George Clements to make bets on horse races at totalisator odds, the second of printing totalisator odds, and the third of publishing the same have been pending against Charles Petersen Lindergreen. Lindergreen was fined £IOO by Mr E. .fage, S.M., on March 11th last for assisting in the running of a gaming house, and the other charges were held over until Mr Page returned from abroad. Evidently the acoußed found that confession was good for the soul, because yesterday he walked into the Police Station and informed Chief-De-tective Kemp that he was prepared lo plead guilty to the remaining charges. He had given up the secretaryship <u. the Dominion Sportsmen’s Association, and before going into business m Christchurch desired to have the matter cleared up. “He did not want to have the sword of Damocles hanging over him,’? said the chief-detective when accused entered his plea of guilty before Mr: F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. The police did not press for a penalty. and tho accused was omvicted and discharged on each of the three counts.
