ISIOSESSffE ASSSOHBi EXECUTIVE DISCUSSES VARIOUS RE--QUIREMENTS PUBLIC SERVICES AND ROADS A meeting of the executive committee of the Lyall Bay Progressive Association was held last week. Mr J. H. BurgoyneThomas presided over a moderate attendance of members. The Secretary of the General Post Office wrote stating that arrangements had been made at the Lyall Bay Post Office for a posting box of larger dimensions, and with.a largw aperture for the reception of newspapers and other packets. , It was stated that the City Council had decided to erect the, ladies' restroom on the seafront to th© east of the present tramway waiting shed at Onepu road. The work would be put in bund as soon as possible. The City Council had also advised that a lamp would be erected at the foot of Buckingham street in Tavistock road. , The city engineer advised that provision has been made on the estimates for the current year for the metalling of Onepu road, and the work would be put in hand as soon as a roller was available. TRANSFER TRAMWAY TICKETS. In regard to the institution of transfer tickets advocated by the association, a reply was received from the Town Clerk stating that the council was strongly of opinion that the issuing of transfer tickets on the Wellington svstem was not advisable. Opinions had beeh received from the traffic manager of the Sydnev Tramways, from the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board, and Hhe Brisbane Tramways Trust: also from tLe general manager and traffic manager of the Auckland Tramways. All expressions of opinion were strongly against the vse of transfers from one car to another . Tho City Council wrote stating that instructions would be issued for the work of coping with the sand drift on the eastern side of Onepu road as ebon as the. several amounts due under the scheme Had been paid. . The accounts wpre now being sent out. Some had already been paid. # lt was decided to refer back to the city engineer a request for the asphalting of the right-of-way between Palm avenue and Freyberg street. This vork would be a-boon to school children using the path in wet weather. A, request had been made to the cjitv engineer urging the work to be proceeded with of the construction of the high level footpath, Tavistock road to Buckingham street from Queen’s Drive, and the widening of Oueen’s Drive and formation of the footpath from Coutts street to Freyberg street. The city, engineer had replied stating that it was impossible to- commence these works until some of those already in hand had leen completed. The gang? allotted to the district were fullv occupied. It was intended to widen the Queen'* Drive daring this winter, as soon as the men were available* APPRECIATION. Appreciation was expressed of the courtesy and promptitude with which inquests forwarded by the secretary had been answered by the authorities. The Secretary of the General Post Office, m one instance, and the Town Clerk in another, .were specially mentioned. In. both cases the answers had been favourable. On the motion of Mr A. C. Blake, it was resolved to congratulate the City Council on adopting a universal fare for all sections .of the tramways as a, step toward© solving the housing ouestion. - The chairman stated that during the electrical change-over an individual posing as an inspector had been going round the houses and effecting thefts, if the mistress of the house happened to be away. Several cases' were quoted. In one instance every electric light globe *in the-houke was removed, and in others, sums of money were taken. It was decided to draw the attention of the City Council to these thefts, and to urge that its officers on duty as inspectors or otherwise should be supplied with credentials or badge as evidence of their authority. The City Council is to be asked to make provision for the staffs of hospitals and other institutions, and convalescent patients, to enable them to record their vote at the municipal elections. At present they are disfranchised. It was moved by Mr P. E. Cairhs—"That this association views with concern the decision of the City Counpil to purchase a road roller of other than British manufacture, and trusts that before the order is confirmed the fullest investigation will be made with the view of obtaining a roller of British manufacture if possible/' *Pbe secretary was instructed to ask the City Council when the. work of duplicating the tra mtrack in Onepu road would be proceeded with. Provision was ; originally made for this work in the 1920 loan schedule.
