Mr Stanley Bruce, the Prime Minister, in a letter to the State Premiers concerning the position of soldier settlement?. says that the Commonwealth after a careful review of the position, is of opinion that the proper course to pursue is to write etT C 0.000.000 of the loans made by the Commonwealth to the State* for soldier settlement. This would bring th* Commonwealth’s share of the losses »o over £10,000.000. In all nenrlv ofi.iiOO returned soldiers have been settled on the land, at a total cost of over £53.000.000, In mnnv cases difficulties have had to b* laced by the«o settlors; hut there ,s sound reason for the belief that m;hc this- huge scheme .substantial will ultimatelv accrue, both to the returned soldiers and to Australia.
