POSITION UNCHANGED
DISPUTE AT DUNEDIN NO RESPONSE TO LABOUR CALL CONFERENCE ABORTIVE Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 18. The position on the waterfront remains unchanged. A call was made at 7.45 o’clock on Saturday morning, for labour for the collier Kawatiri, when a large number of waterside ’ workers were present, but there was no response. There are now five vessels idle, the Kawatiri, the Wanaka, the Kamo, the Breeze, and the Kotare. The employers’ representatives asked the union to meet them in conference on Saturday .morning. At this conference the representatives of the union stated that "the great majority of its members had decided not -to depart from the position they had adopted in regard to the Kawatiri, and as a, result of this statement no further progress was made towards a settlement of the trouble. The employers state that, so far as they know, Newcastle coal is being worked at other ports in New Zealand at the rate of pay prescribed in the award. “THERE IS NO DISPUTE” The contention of the employers is that in the present instance there is no dispute. Technically, the proper course, they state, is for the men to start work, and then, if they have a complaint, they have the right to refer the {natter in the form of a dispute to the local disputes committee.
