FRUIT GROWERS PROTEST

INCREASE IN RAILAGE RATES DUTY ON IMPORTED LEMONS. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, July 18. A telegram to the Railway Board has been dispatched by the Otago fruit growers protesting against the proposed increase in railage rates on fruit, timber in shooke, and empty returns. It is requested that the proposed alterations be not put into force until reEresentations from those interested ave been heard. The fruit growers also protest against the proposed increase of duty on imported lemons. Whilst favouring the protection of New Zealand industries, they hold that Npw Zealand lemons cannot compare with those from foreign countries and Australia for keeping quality. The increased duty would not only increase the price, but practically prohibit a section of the public from purchasing them. It was also resolved to ask the Government to remove the embargo qn Californian lemons, as it is understood that the disease that warranted the embargo is now clear in districts where lemons are grown.
