In the Police Court, Campbell, Ehrenfried, and Co. and two of its officers, Sidney Horace Abell and Albert Ernest Bollard, each were charged with making false income returns. Six charges were preferred. The court imposed fines of £IOO and costs on each of sis charges, fwo a'gainst the company and two against each of the other defendants. Counsel for the defence said h’e had pleaded guilty as the Act was all-em-bracing and it was hard to resist it even if tTie offences were only negligible. At the time of the offence, 1920 and 1921. conditions were abnormal, and the managing directors were absent and had no knowledge of the offences. The company’s managers followed the commercial system, which evidently did not conform to the Land and Income Tax Act or the department.
