BUS SERVICES

POSITION IN THE CITY REFERENCES AT COUNCIL MEETING. Speaking of ’bus services at the City Council meeting, last night, the Mayor said tJSe council would have to go into the question of making the maximum out of expenditure. The tramway’s committee reported: “That they have received a deputation from the Melrose Ratepayers’ and Electors’ Association regarding the proposed ‘bus service in the Melrose district. The deputation urged the extension of the service to Hornsey road on one side and to John street on the other. The deputation also urged a reduction in the proposed fares and, a more frequent service than that proposed. “The committee are of opinion that the proposed terminus on the Melrose side should be extended to Hornsey road as soon as the portion of the roadway between the top' of Sutherland road and Hornsey road has been regraded, and a turning point made for the ’bus. “With regard to the other matters raised by the deputation, the committee are unable to favourably recommend these at tho present time. Only experience will prove the requirements of the district. “That with regard to the representations made at the last meeting of the council by a deputation of the New Zealand Association of British Manufacturers, in connection with the recent purchase of motor ’buses for the corporation, the committee ' can only state that the machines were recommended by tlie Motor Transport Board after a thorough investigation by that board and by the chief traffic inspector and the general manager of tramways. “The report of the general manager and the chief traffic inspector was submitted to the council, when the recommendations contained therein were adopted.”
