PHOTOGRAPH OF THE MOST REV. DR. JULIUS, FIRST ARCHBISHOP OF NEW ZEALAND.

As a young priest, Dr Julius (who is ill in Sydney) spent some years of successful work in the East End of London. At the time of his election to the Bishopric of Christchurch, Dr Julius was Archdeacon of Ballarat. Dr Julius was a sportsman in the best sense of the term; when he first came to New Zealand 35 years ago he did much rough cross-country riding, especially on the West Coast. Our picture is interesting, as Dr Julius is arrayed in Cope and Mitre, the proper vestments for a Bishop of the English Church, though not common in New Zealand, a sign of the continuity of the church and its identity with the Church of Augustine, Beckett, and Analem. Dr Julius was on'his way to Englr.nd when he was taken ill in Sydney, where an operation was performed. According to Press Association cables he seems to bo progressing favourably. —Steffano Webb.
