DEFECTIVE CHILDREN

REGISTRATION AND CLASSIFICATION • WORK OF COUNCIL OF EDUCATION At the meeting of the General Council of Education yesterday the Director of Education, Mr J. Caughley, reviewing the work of the past year, said that in reference to defective children, the recommendations of the special commission had been considered, and it was hoped soon to have a special board to carry out the recommendations of the commission The probable activities of the first year would be along the lines (if complete registration and classification of all cases. When the whole scope of the problem was understood and the nature of the schools dealt with, there would be statutory provision made for those requiring immediate attention. The director referred to the open-air schools which had been or were being established in Canterbury and other part 3 of the South Island; sex hygiene, the recommendations of the commission now being before the Government; agricultural instruction, in reference to which the report of the commission would lie roady almost immediately; payment of secondary school salaries; and grading of’secondary school tea ohors—a very difficult problem. He did not know of any other country where definite classification of teachers had been attempted. In England a scheme had been suggested, but the technical schools there were very different from those in New Zealand.
