WOMAN IN HOSPITAL

KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR-CAR SERIOUS INJURIES INFLICTED. Severe injuries to the arm and head were sustained by Mrs EVans, of 33, Tasman street, about 2 p.m. yesterday, when she was knocked down by a motorpar at the corner of Taranaki and Manners street. The injured woman is the wife of Mr Harry Evans, traffic inspector of the Harbour Board. Mrs Evans is 47 years of age, and had, acqording to an eye-witness, just stepped Off the footpath when a Ford car driven by a Mrs Turner swerved round the -dorner from the direction of Courtenay Place, and colliding with her, knocked her down. Varying statements are made about the speed of the car, which caught up the pedestrian and carried her about six or seven yards and deposited her in the middle of the road. The motor-car then swerved to l)he right-hand side of the street, and came into contact with a heavy lorry carrying gravel, and belonging to Messrs Walling Brothers, Rona Bay.

The heavier vehicle’s mudguard was the only portion much affected 1 , although the right wheel and engine of the smaller car, as well as the front, were severely battered.

• The injured woman was lying in the centre of the road, and on the prompt arrival of the ambulance she was removed to the hospital where she was found to be in a serious condition.

At a late hour last night Mrs Evans’s condition was reported as satisfactory. She had regained consciousness, arid although she had 1 been severely knocked about the head she was conrforta ble, and her position was not regarded as critical.
