Fifty coins of tho period of King Alfred the Great and earlier Saxon me hare lis were found in a cavo in Manifold Valley, Staffordshire, recently, by a Primitive Methodist minister. The cave opened with a narrow passage, and tliero were four chambers, one of considerable size. in. this were found 49 coins, including 20 of tho reign of King Alfred, others of Ethelrecl and Ethelwelf, and some issued by an Archbishop of Canterbury, three rings, a brooch, and some gold braid. The. district coroner held an inquiry, the jury returned a verdict, of “Treasure trove,” and the coins were claimed for the’ Grown.
