END-OFtSEASON FUNCTION

PRIZES PRESENTED

After an enjoyable and successful season extending over something more than six months, the Kclburn Croquet Club held its closihg function at the payilion on Wednesday afternoon. The unusually large attendance was an in-, dication of the interest and enthusiasm shown by members in the affairs of the dub. In her words of welcome j the president, Mrs Henderson, briefly ■reviewed the past season’s activities! and complimented Mrs Leach, tliq champion, and other player? who had achieved success in the club’s tourna-j ment. After a delicious afternoon tea, at which the members were the guest? of the president, the prizes won during the season were presented. The opportunity was taken to present to the club’s officers tokens of appreciation of their services during the season. Mr? E. McKenzie (lion, treasurer) was the recipient of a handsome jardiniere, Mrs McDowell (club captain) of a silver jewel case, and Mrs Austin (hon. secretary) of a silver tea service. To each of the members of the tea committee, the president made a personal ■presentation of a crystal jelly dish, as well as handkerchiefs to those competitors who were Unsuccessful in the “A” and the “BB” consolation events. Mrs McDowell handed similar gifts to the players of the “C” division.

A notable feature of the proceedings was the presentation by Mrs R. W. McVilly, lffe patroness of the club, of an honours board. This magnificent piece of work, designed and executed by the firm of Messrs Mayer and Kean, consists of a very handsome and artis-tically-shaped oak pane], with relief moulds on tho top, base, and sides. Centrally placed are three sterling silver .panels bearing the names of the past’ champions and champion pairs, with space for the inscription of the names of similar champions for twenty: years to come. Inset at the top of the board are crossed mallete and ball, made in relief in sterling silver, and between these and the silver panel? are two sterling silver scrolls in relief, bearing the inscription: "Kelhurn Croquet Club, Championship Honours Board.” The name of the donor is inscribed on a separate silver shield at the foot. • The honours board itself is contained in a beautiful oase of polished oak and plateglass, the back being lined in blue velveteen. The gift as well as the sentiments which accompanied it were received with an outburst of applause, and the president assured Mrs Me. Villy that the gift would be cherished as a lasting memorial of her goodwill and unfailing interest in the welfare of the club. Before the conclusion of the functiqp, the president conveyed to Mrs Watt and Mrs Fair, who are about to leave for an extended visit to Australia, the best wishes 'of the members for a pleasant holiday.
