SPORTS RESERVES

HARBOI'R BOARD AND EVANS BAY.

The Sports Protection Association ifc takiflfc an interest in the municipal elections insofar as the City Council has the handling and development of numerous pleasure grounds and reserves which are used for purposes. At a meeting held xo discuss these matters Mr C. P. Skerrett, K.C., president of the New Zealand Football Association. asked what the Harbour Board was going to do with Kvans Bay? Evans Bay appeared to he a very desirable bathing place, and was gaining more and more in popularity. No one, he remarked, knew at present what the Harbour Board meant to do. Residents of the district wished to assist in any scheme to conserve the beach for bathing purposes. It was

quite evident that some pressure should be brought to bear on the board, so that the hoard might at least say what it was going to do. It would be a matter for great regret if the proposed reclamation was used as a factory area.

Mr G. Mitchell, chairman of the Harbour 'Board, speaking at another meeting, stated that the work done to date had cost about £IOO.OOO. Ht .supported the proposal for reclamation, provided always that the rights of the people and their bathing facilities were conserved, The board had a primary duty before providing for playing areas and the like, and a duty to see that people were provided with a means nf livelihood. Play areas would not satisfy their appetites.
