According to "The Motor Ship,” the Aorangi, which is a liner of 23,000 tons displacement, and carries nearly 1000 passengers, maintains an average speed of 17 knots on a daily fuel consumption ot 58 tons of t oil, for all purposes. This is equivalent to about 0.451 b per s.h.p. hour, reckoned on the liorse-power of the machinery* whereas with modern steam-driven liners equipped with oil-fired boilers, the consumption is usually between 0.91 b and lib of oil.
